Weekly Essentials: Oils against mental health

We have seen a spike in mental health issues and professionals in the field are working hard to find cures. Clinicians have been researching aromatherapy and essential oils to aid their patients because some oils have antimicrobial, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative and antidepressant properties.

People have used essential oils to treat depressive symptoms but they are not a cure, rather something to aid and help manage symptoms. There is no scientific evidence as to how essential oils work on the human brain however, the oils trigger olfactory receptors in the nose to signal parts of the brain that regulates your mood.

Though essential oils have not been tested on humans they have been tested on animals and the potential benefits have been proven.

Like lavender , which induces relaxation, Frankincense, and blue Tansy can help relax the mind. Frankincense promotes a feeling of relaxation and peace and blue Tansy provides a feeling of excitement. Essential oils contain concentrations of the chemical linalool, which inhibits anxiety and sadness. Linalool is in these essential oils Cinnamon, Cyprus, ylang-ylang, lemon, tangerine, spearmint and rose.

Recent studies have found inhaling lavender induces sleep for those who have experienced sleeping problems. Geranium, Egyptian, and lavender are some of the essential oils are used to improve sleep. Oils that are used to aid in sleep depravation slows the heart rate ad lowers the blood pressure, which relaxes and thwarts the feeling of anxiousness.

Every day life throws at us challenges we face and some time that may make us depressed, anxious and sometimes we loose sleep. The solutions to these problems are not always easy however we can use essential oils to manage our anxiety, depression, nervousness and improve our quality of sleep. Hospitals around the world have taken on essential oils as treatment or for use in the waiting areas or wards.
