What are essential oils?

The composition of essential oils are not oils even though they may feel oily but are very different from animal and vegetable oils. The extracted material from essential oils are too strong to be used on it own therefore they must be combined with carrier oils to be used on the body or used in an oil diffuser. Essential oils have been around since the beginning of recorded history and has been used for scent in beauty products, scenting and to heal the body.


What are the benefits of essential oils?

Twenty-four-hundred years ago herbal physicians knew and used the great benefits of essential oils and used them to heal people. Now essential oils are mainly regulated to cosmetics and adhere to strict FDA standards set for drugs- products meant to treat or prevent illness. Research has been happening and suggest that there are benefits to essential oils from preserving meats to hair growth, relaxation and improved focus.



What shouldn't essential oils be used for?

Essential oils can be very beneficial but can also be harmful if not used correctly. Avoid putting essential oils directly to your skin before diluting, do not drink essential oils and do not taste them. Essential oils are very concentrated and can cause irritation and an allergic reaction. Reactions can cause skin burns, poisoning, and hives. Some of us are more sensitive than others and some oils can cause adverse reactions. Avoid using essential oils around children and pets as they are more susceptible.

Always do a skin test before using any oil my mixing it with a carrier oil and doing a skin test. If you tend to be allergic to most things or have sensitive skin make sure you take a lot of caution. It is crucial if you are particularly sensitive or have any skin conditions or ailments to seek help from a dermatologist or physician before using any essential oil. The over usage of essential oils can also give a toxic reaction so be very mindful and use the oils properly or start with very small dosages. Essential oils cannot cure or prevent any disease or illness therefore please take precaution when purchasing oils from supplier that state otherwise.



How to use essential oils?

The most common way to use essential oils is through aromatherapy which gives great smell and benefits of relieving stress. One great way is to diffuse an oil like lavender or camomile at the end of a very stressful day. For sure be mindful of pets, children and others who might be sensitive to the oils. Other methods that you can use essential oils are through bracelets that can be worn thought the day and aroma sticks. You can also mix them in your every day products such as moisturizers by adding a few drops but be mindful of the products composition because oils and other chemicals sometimes don't mix well. You can make your own home cleaning products which are safer than using chemical products as essential oils have antibacterial properties. Adding a couple of drops to your bath and you can use them by diluting with a carrier oil such as almond, olive or coconut.


There are some oils that should not be used topically and those are usually cities oils such as bergamot, lemon and grapefruit. The photo toxic reaction will occur if the skin is exposed to the sun.

Tips

  • If any skin irritation occur while using essential oils immediate apply a carrier oil or dabbing cornstarch can be helpful.

  • The the oils get into your eye be sure to flush it out with cool water.

  • Take major precaution while pregnant as many oils have effects on the uterus which may be helpful if you would like to facilitate child birth. Also take precaution while nursing as the oils can be transferred to the infant.

  • Do not consume alcohol, maybe a small glass of wine with a meal while using essential oils.

  • Using essential oils on medication might interfere with your medicine therefore take precaution and seek assistance from your doctor.

  • Essential oils can remove finishes from furniture therefore be carful when handling the bottles or where you place them.

  • Store oils away from the sun and store in a cool place as light and oxygen deteriorate the oils rapidly.

  • Essential oils should be kept in a dark glass bottle and dropper used for measuring.
